We’re all feeling the strain of quarantine. While necessary, long-term isolation can be mentally taxing. Here are five tips to help your mental well-being during this difficult time.
1. MAINTAIN A ROUTINE
One of the best things that you can do to preserve your mental well-being is to stick to a routine. For example, if you’re used to going to the gym before work, try to wake up early and get an at-home workout in before you go to work or start your workday from home. Maintaining as much normalcy as possible with your daily routine can help keep your mood as lifted as possible, and prevent boredom and distress from taking over.
2. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
This suggestion goes hand-in-hand with sticking to a routine. While you’re at home, it can be easy to go to bed or sleep in later than you typically would. Breaking your regular sleep routine can have adverse effects on your overall mental well-being, so you should try to stick to your typical schedule as much as possible.
3. DON’T OBSESS OVER THE NEWS
It can be easy to be overwhelmed by watching the news and reviewing the updates on COVID-19. While staying informed is essential, you should limit the amount of time you view the news and updates. For example, check updates once daily for no more than 10 to 15 minutes. Catch the critical highlights and then move on to other routines, activities, or engagements with people.
4. PRACTICE POSITIVITY & GRATITUDE
Keep a journal of positive thoughts, ideas, plans, quotes, images, and videos that make you smile and happy. Practicing a positive mindset creates a positive attitude and actions. With everyone spending more time in their homes with family and loved ones, positive energy, will increase patience, tolerance, kindness, and thoughtfulness.
5. MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS
Close your eyes and say woooosaaaa, take deep breaths, listen to the ocean waves hitting against the rocks, raindrops gently falling on the leaves of trees and plants, add in aroma and imagery. Do this for yourself 5 to 10 minutes daily. It will relax your spirit and elevate your soul.
