Job Summary

The Cook's Helper assists in meal preparation and service for children within a juvenile facility, ensuring all meals meet nutritional standards and comply with strict food safety and sanitation protocols. This position supports the Head Cook in daily kitchen operations, maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient environment while adhering to the facility's schedules and dietary guidelines.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in food preparation, cooking, and serving under the direction of the Head Cook.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen areas, utensils, and food storage spaces.

  • Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure a safe meal environment.

  • Support the preparation of meals for special diets or individual nutritional needs.

  • Report any kitchen-related issues, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns promptly.

  • Monitor and restock inventory to ensure adequate supplies and ingredients.

  • Adapt to changing schedules and meal service demands within a secure juvenile facility setting.


Qualifications

  • Previous kitchen or food preparation experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation best practices required.

  • Ability to take direction, follow procedures, and work effectively as part of a team.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with diverse populations in a professional manner.

  • Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work calmly under pressure in a structured environment.


Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Valid Food Handling Certification preferred.

  • Experience working in a juvenile facility, school, or institutional food service setting is a plus.


Working Conditions

  • Flexible work hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • Position requires standing for long periods and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be comfortable working within a secured juvenile facility environment that requires adherence to strict safety and behavioral protocols.


Compensation

Salary: $21.54 per hour
